IBM’s ‘Q System One’ is Germany’s first quantum computer

Foreign media “DW” reported that the Blue Giant IBM announced on the 15th that the first quantum computer in Europe built in Stuttgart, Germany, was officially put into operation. IBM stated that this is the most powerful quantum computer in the European industrial field. In the future, new materials, drug development, and artificial intelligence computing will be carried out.

This IBM-led quantum computer is called “IBM Q System One”, with 27 qubits, installed in Ehningen, about 20 kilometers southwest of Stuttgart, Germany, and operated by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany . The quantum computer is placed in a glass cube with a side length of 2.7 meters to protect the qubits from noise and other physical factors.

German Chancellor Merkel said this is a technological miracle. Quantum computers will play a key role in technological and digital sovereignty and economic growth efforts. The basic installation of this quantum computer was completed in November 2020, but due to the epidemic, it was not officially unveiled until June 15th.

IBM is one of the most active technology companies in the development of quantum computing. It has stated that 2023 will be a turning point in quantum computing technology, and error reduction will grow at an exponential rate by then. IBM also pointed out that it will launch a quantum processor with more than 1,000 qubits in 2023, which is more than 10 times the current technology. Germany, where quantum computers are located, also announced last month that it plans to invest about 2 billion euros in quantum computing research in 2025.
